June 1 API Meetup: APIs and the Enterprise

by shanley on June 7, 2011

Here is video from our June 1 edition of the API Meetup, held at Box headquarters and focused on APIs in the enterprise – building, evangelizing, scaling, managing and marketing from some of the top API implementors and experts in the Valley. From the Box blog:

Wednesday brought the Open API Economy meetup group to Box HQ, and with it a fantastic group of attendees hailing from companies like Netflix, Oracle, IBM, and Prezi. The speakers were also top notch, of course. First up was hacker-turned-consultant Ben Metcalfe, who explained how to create a successful Enterprise-grade API from the ground up. Next was own Jeremy Glassenberg (yes, again!), who taught us how to take an Enterprise API and scale it up. Finally, Tyler Hannan, a man with a voice so booming I had to turn the speakers down, spoke on the “bipolar” nature of messaging around a platform and how it must be different things to different people. We were able to capture this entire meetup on video, so check it out below to catch all our speakers’ presentations.

From our February  API Meetup, Expensify CEO David Barrett dives into the ugly side of APIs in “When APIs Go Bad.” Check out this short talk on the APIs he regrets to this day, building APIs for yourself, when the work of an API isn’t worth it, and the dangers of not committing to an API strategy. Thought-provoking and controversial, but a good reminder on what stands against you when you open up with APIs.
